Antioxidant Fruit
Garcinia indica (kokam) is an Indian spice that is high in antioxidants. The rind of the fruit is used in cooking, cosmetics and has several medicinal properties. Its syrup is served as a cooling soft drink. Kokam has significantly more antioxidant values than any other fruit on Earth. They have high ORAC assay values (29), compared to garlic (19.5), blueberries (15.9), strawberries (13.56), tumeric (13.49), spinach (12.6) and plums (09.49).
Anti Obesity Agent
One of the ingredients of Kokam, hydraxycitric acid (HCA) is a potential anti-obesity agent. It suppresses fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, food intake and induces weight loss.
Tonic for Skin and Liver
In Ayurveda, Kokam is used as an infusion to treat skin ailments such as allergic rashes, burns, chaffing. It is a liver tonic used to improve appetite and allay to thirst.
Relief for Sun Stroke and Heart Burn
Based on Ayurveda, Kokum curry, made of kokum extract and coconut juice, is a traditional home remedy used in cases of flatulence, heat stroke and infection. In the Konkan region of western India, it has been used as a remedy for heart burn.
